    Who Should Not Get the Flu Vaccine? 

 People who should not be given the influenza vaccine are those who are:

  • ill now and/or have a fever
  • allergic to eggs
  • allergic to thimerosal (a preservative)
  • history of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a paralyzing illness)

    Who Should Get the Pneumonia Vaccine?

       People age 65 years and older.
       People under 65 years of age with a chronic illness including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Lung disease
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Alcoholism
  • Liver disease
  • Cerebrospinal fluid leaks
  • People under 65 years of age who have a compromised immune system (e.g.: asplenia, Hodgkin’s disease, leukemia, lymphoma, chronic renal failure, HIV infection, nephrotic disease, chemotherapy, organ or bone marrow transplant.

     

    Who Should Receive a Second Pneumonia Vaccine

    A one-time revaccination is recommended for the following people:

  • Adults age 65 years or older who got their first dose when they were less than 65 years, if 5 or more years have passed since that dose.


  • Adults with a special health condition listed above if 5 or more years have passed since the first dose.

    Who Should Not Get the Pneumonia Vaccine?

    People who should not receive the Pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine include those who are:   

  • severely allergic to a previous Pneumococcal vaccine
  • allergic to thimerosal
  • pregnant
